Our Story

How to find us

We are a highly respected independent firm of Chartered Accountants and Registered Auditors in Leicestershire with more than a century of heritage in the heart of the East Midlands.

Although we now pride ourselves on providing innovative, cost-effective solutions to our clients, our practice is steeped in history and dates back to a time when accountants were just beginning to establish themselves as a necessary profession acting in the public’s interest.

On 11th May 1880, our governing body, The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) gained royal charter from Queen Victoria. This act instigated the merger of a number of separate accountancy bodies that had been established throughout the UK, namely London, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.

The Charter recognised that “the profession of Public Accountants in England and Wales is a numerous one and their functions are of great and increasing importance in respect of their employment”. It acknowledged that the individual societies had not been established for the purposes of gain and that the members did not seek any profit from their membership. Their aim was the elevation of the profession as a whole and the observance of strict rules of conduct in order to promote the highest standard of professionalism.

The Charter was therefore granted to promote the objectives and to incorporate the societies into one body to demonstrate the importance of the profession and raise its character, “thus securing a class of persons well qualified to be employed in the responsible and difficult duties often devolving on Public Accountants.”

Soon after the Royal Charter was granted, Edwin Playster Steeds commenced in practice in 1883 at 20 Friar Lane, Leicester. In 1916, Clement Miles became Steeds partner and by 1920, they employed a clerk by the name of John William Rowley.

It wasn’t long before Rowley’s abilities and ambitions became clear and, following a short partnership with Miles, he formed John Rowley and Co in 1924. The business continued very successfully for many years with John at the helm and, although our founder passed away in 1952, his picture still hangs in our boardroom to this day and his legacy lives on in our current business.

There was little change to the practice until 1996 when we became the first independent accountants in Leicester to gain the Investors In People accreditation, demonstrating our commitment to the development and wellbeing of our team.

Also at this time we formed a sister company, Rowley Turton (IFA) Limited, providing independent financial advice and planning and, shortly after this in 2000, our other sister company, Allbright Bishop Rowley was formed, providing bespoke insurance and risk solutions. These continued affiliations afford us the exclusive referrals we are able to provide to our clients today and enhance our range of services.

In 2002 our name was changed to The Rowleys Group which was swiftly followed by our conversion to a Limited Liability Partnership. The main benefits of LLP status are to allow greater transparency and openness thanks to the disclosure requirements and the need to file annual accounts whilst maintaining the traditional partnership structure which is the most appropriate legal entity for accountancy practices.

2006 proved to be a busy year with the strategic acquisition of another independent Leicester-based practice, DSJ. With the team increasing in size and continued year on year growth, we found ourselves outgrowing our ancestral home and we relocated to Dominus Way at the Meridian Business Park.

By 2007 we became a Limited Company in order to enhance our operational Board with the appointment of a new Director. This largely led the commercial direction in which we continued over the following four years before we established our specialist medical department in 2011.

In 2013 we moved to our current offices at Harcourt Way in preparation for further strategic growth and in 2015 we acquired the practice of Kemp Taylor LLP which saw a further increase to our workforce.

Also in 2015, due to the growing success of our medical sector services, we appointed a further operational Director to head up the department, and 2016 saw the promotion of three managers to Associate Director status.

Now, with a team of technical and operational specialists, we find ourselves large enough to deal with the issues affecting our most complex corporate clients, yet attentive enough to care about the smallest. We enjoy what we do and this helps us build proactive, long-term relationships with our clients whilst making our office a great place to work.

As a business, we focus on the continual development of our people, so every single one of us can fulfill our true potential. This helps us nurture confident, capable individuals who are willing to challenge the status quo and embrace new ways of working, finding the best solutions for our clients, and we firmly believe it is this collaboration that makes our practice the success it is today.
